On May 9 I did split my strong hive, moving the queen and 4 frames to an 8-frame box with a top entrance. Since then the hive has been very quiet, almost silent. I opened the top yesterday to add some sugar water, not pulling any frames. The bees are there. This morning around 10:00 AM while the neighboring hives had moderate in-and-out traffic this hive was silent. I plan on leaving this hive unopened for 2 or 3 more days to see what happens.

I would appreciate any suggestions of what actions I should take.

Thanks in advance.

Simple explanation Philip. When you set up your new split, the older bees of flying age have learned where their hive is and returned to that. The bees that stayed are the younger non flying ones. In around a week those bees are older and you will see a steady increase in flying bees at the new split.
