Hi Barbara,

Build as in put together a pre cut hive or build as in Get lumber and use a chop saw, table saw and nail gun to build?

Building is fun I am somewhat a wood worker who also keeps bees.

there are several type of hives , many have plans on the net available.

Have you picked a style at this point?

Welcome to Bee Source, Barbara. If you're going to build Langstroth hives, two good sources for building bee equipment are: "Build Your Own Beekeeping Equipment" by Tony Pisano and "Building Beehives For Dummies" by Howland Blackiston. You can find plans on Bee Source also, with a little searching. Be careful to standardize dimensions since some sources vary the dimensions. For example, eight frame equipment is usually 13 3/4" wide and 19 7/8" long. Some sources give the dimensions as 14" by 20". As long as you standardize so everything fits, you're okay. Best of luck.
