New Nuc Swarmed

1661 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Harley Craig
I'm a first time beek. A nuc, that I transferred on May 19, swarmed on me today. I had added a second deep two weeks ago.
Luckily I was home today. I saw the whole thing happen. They settled on a small tree, about 20 feet away and 5 feet off the ground. I retrieved them back into their original nuc box. I added 3 frames with new foundation 1 I pulled from their hive that they had started to draw comb on.
A couple of questions.
Should I have done anything differently?
Can I bring the nuc box back into my bee yard (it's currently still under the tree)?
Any other suggestions?
Thank you in advance.

I hadn't at this point, did you mean before or now?
wow that's some build up!

did you inspect when adding the second deep?

what did you see?

how big was the swarm? a five frame nuc size?

good catch :)
I did do some inspection. I added the second because the first was filled to the brim. the strange thing was is the upper box wasn't very full. its almost like they were in swarm mode before I added the second.
It was probably a 4 frame nuc size.

They probably were the very first nuc I ever purchased did the same thing and landed 5 ft from the hive they came out of so I plunked them into another box and set then down 1 ft from their original hive they stayed and both hives built out great
