While sitting and watching the bees come and go, I noticed a large number of drones flying into the hive. I counted about 12 in about 10 minutes. Are these drones from another hive? The swarm i got was only about 1.5 to 2 lbs. Were all these drones from this swarm? I don't recall seeing them when I hived them. :s

You sound as if you may have a concern with the drones being present in the new hive. Drones are ok by me. They breed new queens and wait to breed new queens. They have a specific job. The bees will keep the numbers of drones in check and just right for the hive and what it is doing at the time.

Whether they were there originally or not, I wouldn't worry so much about it.

Good luck.

I've noticed when I have a virgin queen in a hive there seems to be more drones. I'm guessing that some follow her back from mating flights.
