I know the "RNA thing" has been experimented with for quite a few years now. I'm not enough of a scientist to understand if this is a new variation of what has been worked on in the past. The problem that researchers have run up against in the past, I think, is that its not cost effective, is only effective as long as its being fed and the benefit isnt terribly long lasting.

It sounds promising but, until I see a field trial with actual hives, it is just a lab experiment. I defer to the law of unintendeded consequences for the moment.

I wonder what the resident beekeeping biologist thinks about this:

https://www.sciencemag.org/news/202...cterium-might-help-save-vulnerable-honey-bees

If this pans out it could mean the end of colony loss to Varroa.
while its all well and good and promising, ask any farmer thats been sued by big ag for having corn in their field thats genetically modified, that they didnt plant or buy. it was due to pollen drift.

now, isnt there a distinct possiblity/probability that if they find bees in your apiary, that have the gene /modification they describe here, and you didnt purchase that queen/bee source and didnt sign their contract 'not to distribute', the same thing would happen?

just food for thought. this bears keeping eyes and mind wide open i think..

There are a number of "innovations" that will "revolutionise" beekeeping, that have been talked about, and in the media, for quite a few years.

The amazing power of mushroom water keeps cropping up, for example.

I have noticed something that is almost a rule of thumb. Which is, the successful ones are adopted pretty quick, and the ones that are still making media headlines but not being used 5 years later, never get off the ground.

If it's anything like the lithium salt study a year or two ago, somebody is already ordering a bag of GMO bacteria from Alibaba, borrowing the wife's measuring cup, mixing it with their finger, and pouring it in a hive.
