From reading some posts a thought poped-up

Has there been a study on natural comb construction other than the "bee space" ,"cell size", width etc. What came up (to me) was "communication holes" or other passages that the bees build in naturad comb that plastic foundation would prevent:s Just a question, but I am starting to think foundationless frames are the way to go (at least for hobbiest BKs) and let the bees do there own thing.

forgot to add; what is the relationship from frame to frame for these "communication holes" or other passages??

Last year I drilled two 3/4 or 1 inch holes in some plastic frames to see if the bees would use them or if they would draw comb over them.

They drew comb over about half of the holes. Some frames they drew comb over both holes, and some frames they drew comb around the holes. I could not find a rhyme or reason as to what determined if they drew comb over a hole or not.
