So I have a hive that is currently 4 nucs deep, I overwintered in 2 nucs and it has exploded into 4 nuc boxes deep now. My burning question how would you split this hive to hopefully get some of this queens genetics, she is prolific layer, very dark almost black she is. I was considering just moving the 4 nucs into 2 10 frame boxes and turning them facing each other allowing for the driftback and allowing the queenless to rear their own.

So you have four five frame deep boxes on top of each other full of bees right? Just set down two bottoms and deal the boxes. One for you and one for you. Add two more empty boxes. Or, if you're moving them to ten frame boxes anyway, deal the frames into the boxes. One for you and one for you. If both the new ones are facing the old they will even out pretty well. The one with the queen will always have more bees in it... but in 10 days or less you could reverse the boxes. Don't reverse them after that because you don't want the queen returning from mating to go into the wrong box.

Yes that is correct regarding your question. I do plan on putting them into 10 frame deeps, so just put 10 in one and 10 in another and of course just make sure I have an even amount of pollen, brood, and honey in each and just put them into the V shape to even up the numbers? Better to do this in mid day while the workers are active right?
