I have noticed that every day from around 2 pm to approximately 5 pm the bees from one of my hives are flying furiously around it. Foragers zoom in and out of the hive and lots of others are just buzzing around the hive. So many bees fly around the outside that it can be seen from 100 yards away. Is this just the time of day that they reach peak activity? Are the bees taking cleansing flights? What is causing this since it occurs daily?

Orientation flights. New bees getting to know their surroundings. Daily, about the same time every day. The new bees walk up the front of the hive, take a little flight, land again, and do it again...each time making it a little further from the hive. Orientation flights.
