Contact some local bee clubs, they may have some knowledge of land available for beekeeping.
Can't help you there from here, but curious.., was that a swarm that had/was setting up shop in a compost bin?

put up a notice in farm/feed stores or garden centers
Facebook groups for area small livestock or farming
Stop at small farmstands during the season
Look for local beekeeping email list, group, on-line resource.
People regularly post their properties for bees on my local forum - the real issue is not enough beekeepers to take them up.
I would look for farmers as you drive along the road. Farmers like to have bees on their land.
Advertising on Craigslist is another way to find folks interested in letting you put bees on their property
