Just curious how late into the year you can make splits in GA? This would be giving them enough brood cycles to build up enough to overwinter in a 5 frame nuc box. I will also be feeding going into the fall.
I am in Richmond and next weekend is as late as I will do walk away splits. With a purchased queen, you will be ok to the end of August. Any nuc you make will need close watching and perhaps an addition of bees going into October. With plenty of syrup and pollen patties, they should be strong enough to overwinter. Last year I caught a Sept. swarm and it not only made it through winter, it was one of my stronger hives this year.
