Well, they can't get through #8 hardware cloth (8 to an inch) they can't get through #7 hardware cloth unless there is a bent wire. They CAN barely squeeze through #6 hardware cloth, consistently enough that you can count on bees getting through. The workers can squeeze through #5 consistently and will, while the queen and drones cannot. The queen and the drones can get through #4 hardware cloth.

The numbers indicate squares per inch.
So the #8 has 1/8" squares
It's actually the number of wires per inch, so the openings in #8 are not precisely 1/8", the diameter of the wires must be accounted for, the wire diameter varies.
