Hello everyone!

In a couple of weeks I will be receiving (2) packages of Italians. I will be installing these bees in a pair of new hives with undrawn foundation.

How soon should I treat the hives with oxalic acid? I am assuming Day 0 is too early, but no comb would mean no brood for the mites to hide with.

I am assuming I don't want to consider a mite wash to get an actual count until the bees are well established.

I am in NW Georgia if that makes any difference.

Thanks!

Welcome to Beesource. Once the queen has been released, you have approximately 9 days to get a treatment done to be most effective. After that there is a possibility that there will be some capped brood. There is no harm in treating the bees with OAV a day after shaking them into the hive, however I would wait until the queen was out and about.

I gave new swarms and packages last year an Apivar strip upon installation and they all thrived.

Thank you both for the quick replies.

I had not considered treating with Apivar on the new hives. That may be the path I end up going.
