Hey, everyone,

how small do you make your entrance for the winter? I really don't know.

thanks,

I run solid bottom boards, upper and lower entrances year round with mouse guards on the bottom during winter. Approx 4 1/2" x 5/8" fixed bottom entrance and adjustable 3- 5" x 3/8" upper entrance/screened ventilation.

I put on mouse guards, then a brick shoved over to one side to hold them in place. That leaves about 4" of the perforated guard for entrance. Have been told that's too small but have been doing it that way for years.

Eight frames wide by ⅜” tall twelve months a year. Mice in my area can’t get in, the bees are able to defend the entrance during the dearth, and there is not undue congestion during heavy flows with this set up where I am. It’s also easy on the beekeeper. Your mileage may vary.
