Forgive the ignorant question here, but is there a rule of thumb for an "acceptable" amount of ant activity? I have what seems to be a very healthy hive started from a swarm, but it seems to have a single column of ants headed up and down each time I go out to the hive. Cinnamon or peppermint oil will take care of it for 48-72 hours, or until a rain. My stand is not conducive to using oil, so I'm wondering if I'm to the reaction point that I need to build a new stand. Any advise is appreciated.

I would say that they have reached an unacceptable amount for you, so before you throw in the towel try sprinkling a light amount of diatomaceous earth around, especially in their path. It holds up better after a rain. I had some ants that didn't seem to bother the hive, but it bothered me and it worked. J
