Do I have to move a queen and a few frames from the parent hive? I've got a few capped queen cells in the parent hive so I want to split and get the old queen out but wasn't sure if I could go 10 feet, half mile or if I had to go a few miles. Thanks for any help.

If you set it close to the main hive, she'll be able to retain some bees easier. I would not put her any further away than a foot or two to the side. She is the queen so some of the bees will search her out and find her so she don't lose too much population. If you move her too far away in the same yard, they won't find her, and it would be better to move her 5 miles.

If possible, move over the parent hive and place the split next to it. Essentially placing the two hives where the entrance to the one hive was. I found this useful as it gives the bees a choice so you don't lose as many in the split to either hive.
