If I remove a honey super from 1 hive and place it on another do I need to shake the bees out first?

I don't bother, and it has never caused me any issue. Not a great answer, but there you go.

We usually shake them or bang on the ground to reduce the count.

If you leave them in, bees will be killed. So, it's just a choice you have to make on how many is too many to leave in.

I just use a fume board and Bee Quick as if I was removing the bees from a super prior to extracting the honey. Wait about 5 minutes and most if not all bees will have left the super and then I just place the super on the hive that I need/want it on.
