I've got 2 packages coming in shortly and I've read two schools of thought on how large a hive to get them started in. I am planning on having one deep for for brood. As the brood expands I will add up to supers for a total of 1 deep and 2 supers all for brood. It's my first year and I don't expect honey but I don't want to lift a deep to get to the deep below so I'm going with supers.

How many deeps, supers should I use for the inital instalation?

Any help is appreciated.

Install into your one deep. I would consider going with 1 medium for your additional brood box. I'm writing from Maine but I think you that in MO you should be able to overwinter in those just fine.

Thanks! That's what I was going to do initially. I should have stuck with my first thought.

I would just use mediums and no deeps.
But if you want deeps, I'd use a half of one. A five frame nuc box or a division board in an eight frame box for the first three or four weeks.

I install mine in five frame mediums.
