Hello - I am going to be doing two splits this week and will be using mated queens. I am doing the splits to increase my hive count and to prevent swarming. I am planning the split by moving some brood above a queen excluder and then moving that brood with mostly nurse bees to a new bottom board and then adding the new queen. How much room meaning empty comb or undrawn foundation should be in each hive? I must need some otherwise at least the mother hive with foraging bees would feel the need to swarm again.

Have you thought about using a Snelgrove board? Once you try it & understand how it works, it's fun and you can try a 2 queen hive with it as well as controlling swarming, making queens, etc. I would put at least 2 drawn & 1 foundation or 3 drawn in each. You can always equalize them later on.
