I am curious about the spacing of hives. How far apart is optimal? How close is too close? I have four hives with about six inches between each. Two are Italian and two are Russian. The Italians were started from nucs in May. The Russians were started from nucs this month. All seem happy.

I'm not sure there is an optimal spacing for hives. Hives on pallets are usually almost if not touching and the bees seem to find their own home. With only 4 hives, I'd space them in a way that makes it easiest to work them. Good luck!

If you are not planning on moving them, I would keep plenty of room for you to get to them from any side. You never know when you might have another pair of eyes trying to see what you are doing, and the more room around the hive to see the more eyes you can show it to.
