Sometimes when I look at my hive I notice a snapping, popping sound and when I put my ear to the hive it sounds just like a bowl of rice krispies. I don't usually notice anything else different. I asked a fellow keeper yesterday about it because I had also noticed that particular day, quite a few struggles with bees pulling other live bees out of the hive. The keeper said it sounded like it could indeed be robbing. He told me to check for ripped open cells. I did the inspection and didn't notice any ripped cells or anything else really different. I put the entrance reducer on anyway. I'm still hearing the sounds. Is it possible the bees are building comb and the "chewing" and molding of the wax would be that loud? Or maybe chewing the propolis? I'm not sure what else to attribute it too. I've heard that sound in my other hive, but not as much.
I didn't see that anyone snuck them any rice krispie treats either, although they might enjoy the marshmallow in it.
