I decided that one of my hives needed an entrance reducer. I slid it in, but it wouldn't quite fit, so I grabbed a handy rock and banged it the rest of the way in. The bees were apparently much lower in the brood chamber than I thought (it was about 45F outside), and poured out through the opening in seconds. They weren't too upset, but they responded with amazing speed and gathered on the landing to let me know that while they appreciated the thought they would appreciate it more if I'd use a little more common sense around them.
