Here is the amount of wax I recovered from the single bar I harvested via slice-and-strain on Sept 11 (video on my FB page). Weighed in at exactly 1 oz.
The drawn comb dimension was 15.5" long by 9" deep by 1.5" thick.(topbar wood length is 19.5", like a Lang)
I have heard the much repeated calculation that it takes 8 pounds of honey for the bees to draw 1 pound of wax, and I've never believed the figure. For one, the bees draw wax from a nectar flow so they don't convert it into honey first. Maybe whomever came up with the saying did some calculations, but even if it is true, my bees would draw 16 full bars to use up that supposed amount of 8 pounds of honey. And my full bars of honey weigh between 6-8 pounds before I harvest them. So the way I look at it, 1 bar of my capped honey MIGHT be needed to draw out 16 bars of empty wax comb, IF the saying is true.
I don't usually render wax from just one comb at a time, but the new beekeepers are always asking me "how much beeswax will I get?" Now I have an answer. Approximately 1 oz. per harvested bar.
