I have a good stack of hemlock I am thinking of cleaning up and making some boxes, bottom boards, covers... Is this a good wood? I am planning on dipping them in hot paraffin wax as well if that makes any difference.
It has a bit of a tendency to split if you use screws without pilot and countersink holes. It can be a bit splintery; you would never find it used for handrailing or floors! It weathers well.
I got 1400 BF of it and have been using it for all my building. If it is good enough for barn siding it is good enough for hives. I paint and prime everything and figure it is the finish that will determine your exterior life (as long as it is not in ground contact). I agree with Crofter on the pilot holes and counter bore.
