Looks like dried pollen substitute patties....

How long have you had this hive?

The top pic looks like a bear turning right to go around the rock in front of him. The bottom pic looks like a morel mushroom that got hit by frost.

As to what the pieces actually are-I'd say dried pollen patty pieces or dried mud.

Did you buy this hive established from someone?

Yea, if you bought this as an established hive a week ago, then it's probably leftover parts of a Megabee pattie or some other pattie. That's what they look like after the bees quit using them and they dry out. I've pulled the same pieces out of my hives after the pollen flows start.
Sounds like whoever you got the hive from was taking care of them, helping the start this year off strong.
