We are brand new beekeepers and are trying to determine where to locate our hives on our rural 12-acre property. In back of our house seems to be ideal - good locations for morning sun and afternoon shade. Are there any good rules-of-thumb regarding the distance of the hives from utilities? We have a well, generator and propane tank out back - I want to make sure we don't locate the hives too close to where these things may have to be serviced, i.e., where it might agitate the bees (or service folks don't want to tread!)! Thanks and we look forward to participating on this forum!

Here's the long version: http://www.bushfarms.com/beesfaqs.htm#locating

But as far as a given distance, that's hard to say as not all hives are the same and even the same hive can be more or less defensive over time. It's probably more important that the entrances don't face those things and that there is some obstruction between the bees and the areas you don't want them bother people so they will fly up. Once they fly up, they tend to stay up until they get where they are going.
