Hello from Mississippi

My son and I are trying to get into bees. We are in the process of building our hives and frames in prep for getting our first bees, hopefully soon.
We will have to wait until spring to get our bees, though it seems. There is a local bee keeper but he is not so willing to share his "experience" or help us
with getting into bee keeping.
We have milk goats, chickens etc. and grow vegetables in our little garden. We hope to have bees soon. As for now we will be reading the forums a lot.

LOL...It seems that I am always "herding" something...goats, chickens, kids, horses, etc.

Hmmm, would Russians be good for newbies? Aren't they a little hotter than, say, Caucasians or Italians?

Welcome to the hobby. You might consider building a few swarm traps and placing them in varied spots. It is really a bit late in regards to the swarm season, but they're always some swarming *somewhere*.

Studying before you get your bees is a good move, be prepared for the big day!

It is normally recommended to start with two or more hives. The reasoning so that you can compare their progress to each other.

What type of equipment are ya'll planning to use? I use 8-frame medium boxes for everything...brood boxes and honey supers. Seems to be working well for me. I mostly use wax foundation and I'm basically treatment free. My bees are mutts with a lineage of Caucasian in their family tree. They are gentle bees....a great characteristic to have in your bees.

I should add, though, that the Russians are good bees and have some very good traits especially their hygienic behavior where they deal with mites well. One day I may try a colony of them.

Yes we have a web site www.tubbs apiaries .com and russian bees are just as gentle as other bees .buy russian bees from a certified russian member and try the bees. Hubert
