I am transitioning to foundationless frames this year. I am in the process of putting frames together now, and was planning to fill the groove on the bottom bar with beeswax. My husband just asked, "Instead of filling it with beeswax, can you just turn it over so that the groove is on the bottom?"

So....I'm guessing I would still need to fill it to prevent the shb hiding place. But before I do....is it necessary if the groove is installed upside down?

Got a better idea for you, insert a second starter strip in the bottom groove for the bees to anchor the comb to. I use wood strips that I glue in and wax in the top bar. So far the bees are drawing out nice straight comb and catching the fishing line in the middle. Only problem is that most of the comb is drone sized cells.
