Never been part of online community before but need for information has compelled me to do so. I don't know what to do about hornets attacking my two hives here in western North Carolina.

Welcome Dale. I used to live in Western NC myself. Brasstown and Andrews, NC. Where I bought my first hive of bees. Welcome
Welcome to Beesource Dale! Do some searches for "Hornet" and see what you can find here. (There are a few threads.) If you don't find anything that works, ask a question in the forum. From what I read just now, they can sure do damage to hives.
Welcome Dale! Definitely put in entrance reducers till the problem goes away!
Welcome to Beesource!

Entrance reducers as suggested above can certainly keep hornets out of the hive (assuming your hornets are larger than bees). Entrance reducers come in a variety of forms. All honeybees can pass through 1/4" hardware cloth, but bigger hornets won't be able to.
Welcome to BeeSource! Robbing screen might help also but definitely reduce the entrance.
