After a long and frigid winter, I finally got a day warm enough to open my surviving hives. On one, I opened it to find a mouse nest the size of a basketball in the lower deep and the biggest, fattest, field mouse I have ever witnessed. The mouse guard wasn't as secure as I thought it was. Despite this, this hive survived, and already had a bit of capped brood. I had a lot of losses this winter. Guess who is going on my short list of hives to make queens from?
