Today as I worked the hives I noticed a fair presence of smallish flies , metallic green/bronze in color. Has anyone else been noticing these, and should I be concerned that they'll lay eggs in the hive?

I see some of what you talk about but only on my log hive. They are not carpenter bees much smaller but the drill into the bark and I suppose lay eggs.

Have you been in the hive lately? If not, take a quick look and just make sure everything is ok. I'd be worried about a small hive beetle infestation. I've noticed that flies really love the gooey mess that SHBs create.
