I am in mid-MD and the dearth is starting. I just added apivar to my colonies and noted, as in years past, that the top deep (whether a double or triple) is often full of capped honey/nectar. 10-frame deeps. Very difficult to move. We hear about feeding a little 1:1 to each colony each week during the dearth, but it is really necessary to feed 1:1 even to colonies already so packed with honey in the top box?

Look forward to winter. If they will have enough going in winter without feeding now, then don't. If you are going to have to feed anyway, might as well start now.
