I did two walk away splits. They have frames of eggs and larvae, capped brood, pollen and honey. four frames total. Seeing if they raise their own queens. Did this Wednesday. I left the smallest opening on my entrance reducer. is this the right size? They seem to be crowded at this size. should I do the larger size on reducer? Also left bottom in on screened bottom board. Thank Hoss

I'd use the smaller one. I used the small entrance for my split last year and everything was fine. My understanding is that the smaller opening is easier to defend, which is a benefit for a small hive. I've used the small opening on a large hive and even then crowding wasn't much of an issue.

Just my $0.02.

Mine have a full entrance and they beard on it pretty bad at night. Even when it's cold. I couldn't figure it out and then my buddy mentioned it might be because I'm running foundationless and they probably rather cling to the outside wall vs clinging to each other. Seems reasonable.
