I got some entrance discs to try on nucs with central entrance holes.

I hope to be able to reduce the size of the entry during dearth periods and to be able to lose the bees in when contractors need to work near the hives.

I am wondering why the 4 positional choices are fully open, vent only, Queen excluder and drone excluder. Why,when, would one to exclude drones?

Do you let them fly out during the day and block them from coming in at night in hopes of lowering the numbers of non productive bees in the hive or what?

One approach for collecting drones for queen II is to place a QE over the entrance after the drones are flying. You can then come back later in the day a pick off mature drones. This is a good technique to make sure your dealing with a high percentage of "mature" drones prepping for the II. Not sure if that's what was intended with disc, but sure it could be used that way.
