What are some ways that i can prevent early season swarms?

Do an even split. Move the queen and half of everything except worker bees to new hive.

i 2nd that link to mbush swarm control...good info there. I tried out the empty frames approach last year and believe it helped plus I got some nice natural drone comb in my hives. i noticed the hives did not nearly have as much drone comb off the frame as they have in the past with my foundation frames.
