I have a huge hive that I don’t want to swarm. I’m in Kosciusko, MS. What’s the earliest I can split?

Made my first ever splits years ago (walk aways) when the Easter flowers bloomed. Worked well that year. I'm north of you, but that was like march 25 or so. Don't think I've had a year since that it woulda worked out.

I am generally able to do walk away splits around the first of April. If you have capped drone cells in your hives and daytime temps are above 65°F, you can split and be reasonably sure of success.

I split two a couple weeks ago. Both were large hives making drone brood. It will depend on drones in your area.
I agree with barhopper depends on the drones, and area dependent. Last year I made splits on feb 14. Have drone cells my last inspection so should be emerging. But your area may be different .
