I have read about the deformed wings caused be varroa infestations being referred to as DWV or deformed wing virus. Is this caused by an actual virus being carried by the mites? Or is DWV a misnomer?
An actual virus. According to an article in the American Bee Journal the wings become deformed when the virus invades the bee's brain while it is developing.
And the latest bad news is that while in the past it needed the varroa mite as a vector, that seems no longer to be the case. But the jury is still out on that. More news later this year, I'm guessing. sigh.....
