I have a package of bees coming in a few days and I plan to feed them 1:1 sugar water through a top feeder. Do I need to give them a pollen patty as well? Thanks!

There should be plenty of natural pollen available, but I would give them a small amount anyhow, maybe a 4" square piece. Check back after a few days and remove any patty they have not consumed. By then, the foragers should have figured out where the good stuff is.

If they'll take it, yes. If they mostly ignore it after a few days then take it away.

Pollen patties are hive beetle magnets so if the bees aren't using it up, can cause issues down the road

Thanks! I just ordered one.
You can keep leftover patty in a zip lock freezer baggie and store it in the fridge. The commercial patties should not get moldy, but they can dry out. Homemade patties will do both.
