Hello all,
I'm new. I installed my package bees last Saturday, and I'm fascinated!

One question I have is that I am seeing two different sizes and colors of bees coming and going. I don't see any fighting inside or outside the hive (top bar hive with a window).

The bigger bees definitely seem to be louder when they're flying, and seem to be less steady - they bang into the hive more.

Can you tell from looking at the attached photo if what I'm seeing is drones? Could it be that the package supplier combined bees from two hives that were just different sizes and colors?

The two bees in the photo that are the bigger, darker ones are the one about to land, and the one directly under the entrance hole on the right.

Thanks for any insight!
Josh

You definitely have drones there. All hives have a mix of bees of different sizes and colors. All the workers have the same mom, but not the same dad!

The bigger one on the bottom right is definitely a drone. They remind me of blow flies in size and shape...and they're loud too. You can also tell by looking at a drone's rear end. Blunt without any stinger...
