I put the mite count boards back under the SBBs on my two hives the other day to help keep some heat in because it got colder here. I've since been told that this doesn't really help anything.
However, when I pulled them back out today, I noticed one has a lot more debris on it than the other. They both appear to have some dropped pollen and what I think is granulated sugar(I'm feeding 1:1 syrup in baggies). The one board looks like debris has fallen from between the middle 5-6 frames and the other board looks like it's only coming from a couple of frames off to one side.
What does this suggest?

check to see if the "granulated sugar" might be wax. they might be dropping some when they are drawing comb. if so, nothing wrong, if not, have no clue. I wondered the same when I started, my mentor had me feel the wax they were dropping to show the difference.

most likely its the cappings off of capped brood that hatched. the mite board in/out will only serve to prevent drafts-which are bad. good luck, mike
