Crackling noise

I was checking the boards below the screened boards last night and noticed a "crackling" sound coming from inside the hive. Sounded like when you was up cellophane. Kind of like a high piched sound between crackling and popping. It was loud enough to capture on my cell phone microphone. There were at least two hives emitting the sound. Any idea what they are doing that causes this sound?

Anybody want to venture a guess as to why? It started when I vented the top inner cover with popsicle sticks. It is loud enough that I would have heard it if the top was not vented. Maybe they are trying to make the vented opening larger?

Maybe chewing on the popcicle sticks...
Good answer, I like that one.
No, it is bees. It is a lot of individual sounds all at once from more than one hive. Sounds like popcorn but at a quicker rate. I would upload the sound file I have, but can't figure out how to do it.
I heard a cracking noise coming from a new nuc earlier this year. Not sure if it was the same as your noise, but curious. I though perhaps another type of insect was trapped and trying to escape. The noise subsided after a couple of days.
I asked the same question a couple of months ago and the responses I got were that the bees crackle when they are working the wax. And, I tend to believe that because the hive that was crackling was a swarm going crazy building comb. They were draped and hanging off the frames by the thousands.

I dont know, but thats an interesting theory. I have heard the same, and interestingly enough, it was in a new super with undrawn frames, I will check it tonight Hope thats what it is. Love to think they are building. G
I heard it in one hive that is 4 weeks old from a NUC and I just put a top super with undrawn frames on it, and one that is 10 weeks old that had a top super with undrawn frames. The second one has had the undrawn for a while - they were ignoring it for the last three weeks. I hope they are starting to build comb again.

Here you go. Searched the archives and found a video with the sound. Snap, crackle, and pop:

Likely to be comb building. Nectar flow or feed has stimulated them to get creative!
( heard it too in my new hive earlier in april)
