Hello everyone, newbee here, have been gleaning many good things from the forum. Had all the problems of a new beekeeper this year, but that is not what I'm curious about. I was inspecting my hives and one of them had a very audible crackling noise coming from it. Best way to describe it is a crackling fire. It was not concentrated to one part of the hive, but seemed to be even, if you will, anywhere around the hive I would listen. Does anyone know why they would do this? And how? Thanks, Jay.

Yep, thats it! Thanks for the link to the sound Needo. It might be building comb and hell what do I know, but the sound was coming from everywhere. I would place my ear to the hive and every part of it was the same, no louder or quieter any place I checked. Seems it would be a bit louder near the comb building. Hmm....

I'm still hearing that noise. It started about three days after I installed the packages. My hives are almost 6 weeks old, and they are still building like crazy. This Saturday I am going to attempt my first split and see if I can introduce some local genetics into my bee yard.
