Any idea's on keeping the brood warm during a cold snap. My 2 hives are about 90% drawn out in first brood box. I'm ready to add second deep but I'll wait for a warmer, sunnier day before opening the hives. The hives are in a open field. I built a windbreak fence on the north and west side of hives. My wife suggested to stack a couple of hay bales to keep them warm.

they'll be just fine- they "cluster" together to keep the brood warm (as best they can) a windbreak such as haybales will be excellent. good luck, mike

I would not worry about them right now. I think I am about 15 miles north of you in Linden. I stated two packages last Sunday. If you have 9 frames filled out they should be just fine. The wind break is a great help. But other than that I would let them be. They will be fine this tiime of year.
