I have noticed from time to time that the bees will do this little back and forth motion as if they are rubbing/cleaning the front of the hive. This is the first time I saw this many doing it. What are they doing?

Here's a video.

I've seen videos of huge numbers of bees doing this in a kind of line dance. Sometimes it is a huge formation looking like the branches of a tree. I'd dearly love to catch my girls doing this and make my own video. This would be way cool to watch.

I think it is called "washboarding"

They are scratching the surface with their front tarsal claws. I believe it's some kind of cleaning action. Sometime my hives will get dirty and the bees leave little scratching marks in the dirt and later the surface is clean. Yes, "Washboarding"
