I'm wanting to hear from people as to how you manage your brood boxes for maximum honey production. Please include if you are referring to deeps or mediums. How many do you run? How far into the season do you put in queen excluders? What have been your observations on balancing brood production needs with maximum honey production? This is specifically for production hives, not hives that are used for splits or expansion. If you do split your production hives early in the year, what impact have you seen vs. other methods to prevent swarming?

For me, I run all mediums and have my bigger hives set at three brood boxes. However, they are not true production hives as I pulled a limited number of frames from them for increases and allowed the brood nest to be bigger than that before moving the queen below an excluder. Next year I plan to manage swarms with checkerboarding, which worked well this year, allow some build up, and then limit the brood nest earlier than I did this year.
