"Bring Out Your Dead !"

When the sanitation crew removes dead bees from the hive, how far do they remove them ? Twice just now, during a break in the 40 degree rains here in NH when the sun came out and temps shot up, I saw bees carrying dead bees away from the hive. They were not wasps or yellowjackets, definitely honeybees. Is that normal behavior ?

Yes, it is typical behavior. Hives have caretaker bees. But just like us, some keep the house cleaner than others.

OK good deal. Until today they were just dragging them out and letting them fall on the front "door step". Today when the sun came out it switched to carrying them away a good distance.
The distance dead bees are taken for disposal is dependent on the temperature, with temps in the lower 30's the cleanup crew will leave them on the landing board, when temps are warm enough to fly they will carry the dead far from the hive.
