This is a copied request from Tammy Horn, a great beekeeping advocate, author, and educator here in Kentucky. (More about her here: http://www.tammyhorn.com/index.html)
Thought I would share because it would be beneficial to us all if we could get this to happen.

I am requesting that KRS 139.480 be amended so that beekeepers do not have to pay sales tax on bee equipment.

Rick Rand and Tom McKee have yet to file a bill for this amendment, so I need for you to call AND EMAIL BOTH offices at the State Capitol and HOME before Monday (deadline), and express concern that this request for amendment does not have a sponsor. It doesn't matter if you are beekeeper or not, if you are in KY or not. The bee crisis is *national* and apolitical. Thank you for calling earlier in the week. It made a difference, and it can make a difference again.

A bill has been filed! House Bill 518, initiated by the Kentucky State Beekeeping Association and the Walter T. Kelley Company removing state sales tax from your purchase of beekeeping equipment has been added to a bill and has the potential for a hearing. It has been sent to the Appropriations and Revenue Committee, chaired by Rep. Rick Rand.

Folks, the 518 Train has left the station with the boiler hot and the pistons churning. Now is NOT the time to stop throwing coal on the fire – it’s time to take the coal fire to an unbelievably hot temperature so that we can see that this train reaches its’ final destination. THE ONLY WAY THIS BILL BECOMES LAW IS THROUGH YOUR ACTIONS. Please contact your representatives today!

Below is a list of the committee members, and their contact information. Please contact them all, especially those local to you, and demand a hearing, and a vote in A&R on HB 518.

RICK RAND IS THE MOST IMPORTANT TO CONTACT. HE CAN SAY YES OR NO WITH NO OTHER APPROVAL.

Sales Tax? That's what's keeping you from buying bee equipment? How about no sales tax at all? Why should bee equipment be special?

:Sigh:
I won't be goaded into an interweb argument.

I often wonder why so many beekeepers are so thick-headed.
We are a stubborn group.

Lots of KY Beekeepers on here & many who purchase equipment from KY businesses like Walter T. Kelley that could benefit from saving some money.

But not the State you live in? No response necessary.
Huh?
Take a look at my location.
Upper right hand corner of every post.

:Edit to add:

If your trying to say that not paying sales tax is like not supporting my state, allow me to say this.
The state coffers are making very little off the sale of beekeeping equipment & feed.
Compare that to the value in fruit, vegetable, crop pollination equating $130 billion nationwide.
Honey Production was the lowest ever recorded in the U.S. in 2013.
The U.S. consumes 400 million pounds of honey a year, yet domestic beekeepers produce only 140 million pounds. China and Argentina fill the gap. With proper state-support such as elimination of sales tax, KY can develop forest-based beekeeping to fill this gap.

The beekeeping industry is struggling with CCD, disease, pest, and etc. as it is.
If the state is willing to cut us beekeepers a break why would you be against it?
