I recently made some divider feeder frames from Michael Palmer's design. I found some tempered masonite at Home Depot (yes, the dark stuff) to use it for the sides.
The tempered masonite was a joke. I tested the first feeder and it bloated and leaked like a sieve. If I hadn't already cut up the masonite, I would've taken it back.
So I poured some spar varnish into the feeders and swished it around to penetrate and coat the inside walls.
Then I tested it with water and it held overnight without saturating the masonite or leaking. It worked great.
But, it's been 2 days and they still smell like varnish.
Could I go ahead and use them in hives? Does that smell go away eventually?
