If you had watched the bees for a while,
they would have shown you why they were
on the exterior of the hive.
Here's a guess - they were "warming up"
in the sun before taking flight. The
temps were a little low for bee flight
(most folks say that 55 is the "minimum
flight temperature", but it varies for
different breeds), so they were "catching
some rays" in hopes of warming up enough
to be able to get airborne.
