Sometimes it can encourage the bees to start building the right direction if they have a smaller space to build in, also I have read a few posts that indicate a new package might abscond if the space is to large.. But thats a BIG maby.
I recently hived 2 packages in TBHs... on a Kenyan about 38" long the other a Tanzanian 48" long. No follower boards or any obstructions in the hives. Both are raising lots of brood, filled out several bars and doing great. I do feed 1:1 constantly and have pollen sub patties on both hives.
