A fellow beekeeper sent me this pic. We have had some very hot days in mid-MD these past two weeks. His bees started building comb outside the front entrance. Might this be because of his two mouse guard type entrance enclosures? The one on the right is completely closed off. The left certainly limits air flow. I do not know if he has a screened or solid bottom. Ever see this before?

I have, but maybe for a different reason. Check to see if there are eggs in the comb. Sometimes a returning mated queen sets up house outside her originating hive. More likely in my experience if an SBB is used. Could be that it is too hot in the hive due to restricted air flow and the bees are taking it outside. Just a WAG on that one.

I have seen this happen under screened bottom boards but not the entrance! Perhaps a queen got stuck outside? Maybe an inconsistent acceptance issue among the bees?
